Topaz Lake is a hidden gem located at the southernmost point of Carson Valley, offering unexpected oasis in the midst of the arid Great Basin and towering Sierra Nevada range. This reservoir, originally constructed in the 1920s by diverting the West Walker River's waters, now boasts some of the best boating, fishing, camping, wildlife viewing, casual gaming, and nightlife opportunities in the area, making it an ideal destination for all visitors.
Situated at the head of the Tokopah Valley in Sequoia National Park, Topaz Lake spans across Nevada's Douglas County and California's Mono County, covering an area of roughly 2,410 acres with a maximum depth of 92 feet. It is conveniently located on Highway 395 in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, only 45 minutes south of Minden and Gardnerville, and in close proximity to Toiyabe and Eldorado national forests. During times of high water, the lake is connected to a small, shallow pond by a narrow channel.
Topaz Lake offers a plethora of recreational activities for all to enjoy, from fishing to boating, camping, and even ATVing. It is known as the "home of the trophy trout" and is regularly stocked with fish, making it a year-round fishing destination. The lake's unique location on the border of California and Nevada allows visitors to fish with a license from either state. For those looking for a break from the outdoors, the Topaz Lodge, a casino located on the northwest side of the lake, offers a fun alternative. Additionally, visitors can take the trails of Switchback Mountain to the west and enjoy spectacular views of the lake and surrounding areas.
Accommodation options in the area include the Best Western Topaz Lake Inn and Topaz Lodge, both located near the lake, providing the best of both worlds. Alternatively, visitors can camp on the shores of the lake with the option of motorhome hookups, reservable dry campsites or dispersed camping (free).
To get to Topaz Lake, take Highway 395 from Reno, which is roughly halfway between Mammoth and Reno, for approximately 38 miles.
